(Nature 456, 387-390:  &#8220;<strong>Sequencing the nuclear genome of the extinct woolly mammoth<\/strong>&#8220;).  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoodedhawk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/hair.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[582]\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hoodedhawk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/hair-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"mammoth hair (Stephan Schuster lab, Penn State)\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-586\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hoodedhawk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/hair-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hoodedhawk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/hair.jpg 722w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mammoths went extinct some 10,000 years ago, but have been found preserved in Russian permafrost.  The hair from one of these preserved (mummified) ancient beasts was used to retrieve DNA.  Hair is useful for such extractions as it is relatively easy to wash away contaminating (foreign) DNA.  <\/p>\n<p>One tidbit that I found quite interesting:  where did the researchers get the Mammoth hair?  <strong>They bought the hair on<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/cgi.ebay.com\/2-5gr-WOOLY-MAMMOTH-GUARD-HAIR-from-Siberian-Permafrost_W0QQitemZ120339930604QQihZ002QQcategoryZ3225QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem\">Ebay.com<\/a><strong>! <\/strong> You can too, for only $175.00 for 2.5 grams.  Yes, the researchers did verify that this was actual mammoth hair.  Anyway, the big question is whether or not we will shortly have a Mammoth clone.  Short answer:  not any time soon.
